How and Why is Beyonce Represented in Different Ways Through Her Videos.
I have looked at four beyonce videos to see how she is represented differently in all of them. I looked Single Ladies, Halo, Crazy In Love and Telephone. All of these show represent Beyonce in different ways so that she appeals to different audiences.
In Beyonce’s Crazy In Love video she is show in various energetic dance routines, There is a element of danger and excitement throughout this video. The edit of the video makes the excitement more intense as the fast cuts between all the dance routines make the whole video more fast paced and intense. As the song is called Crazy in Love as the song get towards the climax Beyonce’s dances and persona gets crazier and crazier. This is the video where Beyonce’s alter ego “Sasha Fierce” was born. Sasha is a more Fun, Sexual and Aggressive version of Beyonce. This new Alter ego is a new way for beyonce to be represented and this keeps beyonce’s image new and fresh. This also keep her up to date with the world around her.
In Single Ladies beyonce is represented in quite a saucy and seductive manner this is because the song is about marriage. This video follows a dance routine that is quite playful so fits with the upbeat song and shows that it is meant to be a ‘FUN’ Beyonce in this video. The video is very clean in the fact that it is just Beyonce and two other dancers in a very clinical white room. This makes the video stand out as the dancers are doing quite seductive dance moves which is also representing beyonce in a fun way. Although this video is very simple/minimalistic the video is very effective at representing Beyonce in this way.
In Halo there is a lot more ‘acted’ scenes in this video rather than it being based around a dance/ dance routine. Although there is aspects of dance in this video they are only of Beyonce dancing alone in a studio whereas the other two videos has back up dancers. This is also a different beyonce to the other videos as before she was quite a quirky, fun beyonce this time she is quite a natural, innocent way. This portrayal of Beyonce is helped by the fact the colours are very pastel like and more natural than the previous videos. This all gives the video a heavenly like feel to it which matched what the song is about. This is a good connection with visuals and audio as the song is quite a heavenly heart felt love song.
The final Beyonce song is ‘Telephone’, in this video beyonce is is not her normal playful, serious self she becomes a lot more like Lady Gaga’s eccentric, tongue ‘N’ cheek videos. This is a strange way to see Beyonce as she is taking a backseat in this and is being more of a support/backup artist.
